Broward's hurricane hotline is 311 or 954-831-4000; the city's storm hotline is 954-565-9571. Five county shelters are in Pembroke Pines. Season ends Nov. 30.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to Nov. 30. In a storm, Broward County Emergency Management runs evacuations and public shelters, and the City of Pembroke Pines runs its own Emergency Operations Center for city services, debris and local updates. Heavy rain is a risk here even without a direct hit: FEMA photographed Red Cross workers handing out food and water to flood victims in Pembroke Pines in October 2000.

Sign up for city alerts
The city’s old CodeRED alerts have been retired. To get city emergency messages, create an account on Alert Pembroke Pines, the city’s Everbridge service, through the city’s alert page. The city’s FAQ says residents who do not sign up with a phone number or email will not get its emergency notifications. You can also choose non-emergency alerts such as utility outages, water main breaks and planned road closures. Account help: Everbridge, 866-436-4911.
Know your evacuation area
Broward County uses two evacuation plans, shown on the shelter map in its preparedness guide (PDF):
| Plan | Typically for | Who leaves |
|---|---|---|
| Plan A | Category 1-2 hurricane | The Plan A evacuation area, plus all mobile homes |
| Plan B | Category 3 or higher | The larger Plan B area, plus all mobile homes |
The county says all mobile home residents must evacuate under both plans and may be ordered out for tropical storm conditions, and that people in low-lying areas or beside tidal water should consider sheltering elsewhere. Check your address on the county’s hurricane site before a storm forms. The city also publishes a flood zone map with a message from the mayor about flood insurance.
Shelters
Public shelters are a refuge of last resort, run by the County Commission and the School Board, and not every shelter opens in every storm. Call 311 or 954-831-4000, or check Broward.org/Hurricane, for the ones that are open.
Shelters in Pembroke Pines on the county’s list:
- West Broward High School, 500 NW 209th Ave.
- Silver Trail Middle School, 18300 Sheridan St.
- Pines Middle School (now Pines Collegiate Academy), 200 N. Douglas Road
- Lakeside Elementary School, 900 NW 136th Ave.
- Silver Palms Elementary School, 1209 NW 155th Ave.
Nearest pet-friendly shelters: Everglades High School, 17100 SW 48th Court, Miramar, and Falcon Cove Middle School, 4251 Bonaventure Blvd., Weston.
What to know:
- General population shelters are open to all, with no registration. Each person gets 20 square feet and cots are not provided, so bring bedding, food, water, medicines and documents.
- Pet-friendly shelters: the county requires your pet’s rabies certificate and, for Broward residents, its current county registration tag. The city’s FAQ suggests calling the Humane Society of Broward County, 954-989-3977, about pet sheltering.
- Special needs shelters are for people with medical conditions who do not need a hospital. Pre-register year-round at Broward.org/AtRisk or 954-831-3902.
Sandbags and shutters
The city’s hurricane pages do not list a standing sandbag site; watch Alert Pembroke Pines and the city’s news page for storm services when a storm threatens. The city’s FAQs say taping windows offers no protection; use hurricane shutters or plywood panels, and do not open windows as a storm approaches.
From the city’s FAQ on watches and warnings:
- Hurricane watch: check supplies, shutters and plans, get cash and fill the car’s gas tank.
- Hurricane warning: put shutters up before winds rise, clear the yard, prep the pool, turn the refrigerator colder and fill the bathtub and spare jugs with water.
Tax-free hurricane supplies
Florida no longer holds hurricane sales tax holidays. Since Aug. 1, 2025, these items are always exempt, according to the Department of Revenue’s Tax Information Publication 25A01-05 (PDF):
- Batteries in AA, AAA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt sizes
- Portable generators producing 10,000 running watts or less
- Waterproof tarps of 1,000 square feet or less
- Portable gas or diesel cans of 5 gallons or less
- Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
- Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers
Build a kit
The city says to plan to be self-sufficient for at least seven days after a hurricane, with seven days of supplies for every person and pet in the household: water, nonperishable food, medicines, a flashlight and radio with batteries, a first aid kit, cash and important documents in a waterproof container. The city’s hurricane preparedness guide (PDF) has checklists in English and Spanish.
After the storm
- Report power outages to FPL, not the city; see power outages.
- Do not put bulk trash at the curb while a storm approaches; watch the city’s site for debris pickup. See trash and recycling.
- For Red Cross help, contact the American Red Cross directly.
- To volunteer after a storm, the city keeps a hurricane relief volunteer form.
What this means for you
- Sign up for Alert Pembroke Pines now; the old CodeRED system is gone.
- Save the city’s storm hotline, 954-565-9571, and the county’s, 954-831-4000.
- Mobile home residents must leave under any evacuation order.
- Generators, batteries and tarps are tax-free all year.
