Walter C. Young Middle is the Broward County Public Schools middle school for grades 6 to 8 on NW 129th Avenue in central Pembroke Pines, next to Charles W. Flanagan High. Its zone is entirely inside the city. It is the Pembroke Pines school most directly affected by the district’s school consolidation plans: it lost the part of its zone west of Interstate 75 this year, and a proposal now under review would close it.

Enrollment and teachers
- District count: 538 students on Aug. 21, 2026, the 10th day of the 2026-27 school year. That is 117 fewer than on the same day in 2025, according to the district’s Tenth Day Enrollment Count.
- Federal count: 820 students in the 2023-24 school year, with 41 full-time-equivalent teachers, according to the NCES directory. That works out to about 20 students per teacher.
- Building use: the district’s Redefining Our Schools 2026-27 data report (PDF) counts 538 students in a building with permanent space for 1,319, or 40.8% full, and lists it among the schools below the School Board’s 70% under-enrollment threshold.
The district’s Oct. 6 workshop presentation (PDF) charts the school’s enrollment falling from 1,131 in 2017-18 to 538 in 2026-27, and says 48.5% of the middle school students who live in its zone attend charter schools.
State report card
Florida grades every public school A to F. A school’s grade is the share of possible points it earns on state test results, learning gains and, for high schools, the graduation rate and college and career acceleration. The state’s 2026 file sets an A for a middle school at 64% of points or more.
| School year | Grade |
|---|---|
| 2025-26 | A (68% of possible points) |
| 2024-25 | A |
| 2023-24 | A |
From the state’s 2026 school grades file, the share of students scoring on grade level on the state tests in 2025-26:
- English language arts: 70%
- Math: 75%
- Science: 64%
- Social studies: 80%
- Middle school acceleration (a state grading component): 90%

The 2026-27 change. On Jan. 21, 2026, the School Board approved the feeder change “Walter C. Young MS to Silver Trail MS,” according to the district’s May 12 Redefining Our Schools update (PDF). The zone map says that from 2026-27 “the portion of the Walter C. Young Middle boundary west of Interstate 75 will be transitioned to Silver Trail Middle.” That moved the Silver Palms Elementary zone to Silver Trail Middle.
Feeder schools. Comparing the district’s elementary and middle school boundaries, the zone east of I-75 takes in most of Lakeside and all of Pembroke Lakes elementary zones, plus part of Pines Lakes. All of it goes on to Charles W. Flanagan High.
Broward County’s boundary map data still draws the zones as they were before the 2026-27 changes, so the feeder patterns on this page apply the district’s 2026-27 changes to that data; the district’s zone maps and Find My School tool are the authority for any address.
The closure proposal. The district’s Oct. 6 workshop presentation (PDF) lists two options: “Transition the students into Pines 6-12 and Silver Trail MS,” meaning Pines Collegiate Academy 6-12 and Silver Trail Middle, or “Transition the students to Charles W. Flanagan HS and create a 6-12 school.” Community feedback summarized in the same presentation asked that students move as one unit, that the dual language pathway be kept and that special education students not be displaced. The presentation notes that the district has a 50-year land lease with the City of Pembroke Pines for the site. The district plans final Redefining Our Schools recommendations in November and School Board decisions in December 2026.
